Chapter 12

Anthony’s fate was in my hands. The poor guy couldn’t catch a break.

I was a singer, not a superhero or a secret agent. I’d never been in a fight in my life. I’d had fights fought over me a couple of times, but that probably wasn’t relevant. Flattering, but not relevant. What the hell was I supposed to do? I could rush out there in a bold and daring attempt to save him – and I was willing to do that – but it didn’t seem likely to do any good. If Anthony could not take the blood runners down then I certainly could not. As long as all these vampires remained in the room, then there seemed nothing I could do to help Anthony.

So I had to get the vampires out of the room.

The blood runners’ attention was focused on Anthony, strapped to the table, so it was easy for me to sneak back out the way I had come in, dashing back up the stairs. What I needed was a distraction, something to draw them out of the room. I could make a ruckus, break some furniture, maybe some windows, but would that be enough to get all of them out? It had to be all of them because I didn’t fancy my odds against even one of them.

No, when it came to creating a proper distraction, something chaotic enough to clear the room so I could run back down to free Anthony, then there was obviously only one way to go.

I chose to start my fire in the kitchen, because it was a nice long way from the stairs leading down to the factory floor, and because the room had a fire alarm on the ceiling. I wasn’t interested in just setting off a smoke detector, I wanted a good blaze that required as many people as possible to put it out, and by the time I ran back down the corridor to be in position, the kitchen was burning nicely.

The alarm went off just as I hid behind a door near the basement entrance, and I watched in delight as the blood runners ran up the stairs. For a moment, as I was lighting the curtains, I had wondered if I was putting the caged humans in unnecessary danger, but the sad truth was that those poor victims represented a serious profit margin to the vampires and there was no way they would let any harm come to their investment.

Once the last vampire had run out, heading in the direction of the burning kitchen, from which yells for water were already issuing, I dashed back down the stairs. I hesitated briefly as I entered the factory, making sure that the coast was clear. It was, they had left Anthony securely strapped to the table while they hurried to address the more urgent crisis. They probably thought he had started the fire earlier.

I raced across the room and began undoing Anthony’s straps before he had even had a chance to register who had come to his aid.
